On Saturday 16 August in great weather for tennis, Chris Lewis, a very active player himself, took time off court to run a tournament with an emphasis on raising money for the charity, Tommy’s. This is the third time he has organised something similar at the club, on each occasion for a different charity. The operation requires preparation, a major part, as well as running the event on the day.
The ethos was friendly competition (round robin) with a running handicap which ensures close matches. There was a lot of tennis played, tiring by the end for some, and tiring, perhaps, for Chris in a different way, as he had smoothly marshalled us on and off court and recorded and interpreted the accumulated scores.
There was a raffle with generous prizes, and refreshments, contributed to and enjoyed by the players and supporters.
Overall, it was a great day for the club. While many of us will be replaying in our minds the shots we missed, or, in some cases, basking in glory, it is not over for Chris who is doing the Great North Run in aid of the same charity!
Chris wants to thank everyone for their support and contributions. By virtue of sums raised on the day and via his “just giving” page, he has raised so far £380. We want to reciprocate thanks to him for arranging the fun.
