Planning Permission application with NCC

A planning permission application for new courts and floodlights has been submitted to Northumberland County Council.

The club's application was handled by James Cromarty, Yeoman Archiecture, in Berwick.

Works proposed include the resurfacing of our double tennis courts with a manufactured surface of Matchplay 2XL Needlepunch Surfacing and the installation of six 10M High Floodlighting Columns.

Funding for these works will be drawn from the club’s own funds, and an LTA loan and grants from regional and national organisations supporting public and community projects.

Without investment in new facilities, the club will struggle to grow and retain its membership and may be forced to close

The installation of floodlighting and the new all-weather playing surface on our double courts will greatly improve the quality of the facilities and will help us attract more members from all age groups to join the club and encourage visitors and tourists to use the courts.

According to the LTA, venues providing floodlit tennis have an enormous advantage over those without lighting:

  1. On average venues with floodlights have 50% more members and improved retention levels.
  2. Able to attract and retain coaches and deliver coaching opportunities year round.
  3. Increased revenue through membership and pay and play. Between November and April when daylight is shorter, lighting outdoor courts adds 35% more playing time
