HEWITT WINS AT THE NORTHUMBERLAND CLUB

WATCH SKY INTERVIEW

Ashley Hewitt captured his first pro title on Saturday at the Aegon GB Pro-Series Newcastle. Hewitt, came back from a set down to overcome second seed Axel Michon of France 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-3.

“I’m really pleased to get through that and it feels good to win my first title” said Hewitt after the final. “I knew I just had to hang in there and I’ve been playing good tennis all week.”

With rain a constant threat throughout, second seed Axel Michon attacked first winning a long first set 6-4.

The Frenchman then looked on course for his 11th pro singles title, when storming ahead 4-1, 40-15 in the second, before an unflappable Hewitt won five of the next seven to take the match into a tie-break, which he then won 7-4.

With the first two sets being played in drizzle, the clouds started to lift for the final set and some inspired tennis from 21 year-old Hewitt, who after serving out for the title at 5-3, received a standing ovation as the player’s shook hands.

Hewitt was understandably delighted with his first title, having already beaten Borna Coric, Dan Evans, and Dan Smethurst on route to the final.

Hewitt, who now sits at a career high of 623, plans to return to Bolton for a couple of weeks training.
